I need to read books like 'Reconstructing Amelia' to remind myself why I read Classics and Fantasy book, and need to stick with them. I had really high hopes for this book, first there was this whole awesome story-line. A single mother trying to figure out the death (ruled out as suicide) of her teenage daughter. I though this would be heart-wrenching and maybe this book would actually make me cry, plus who does not love a good murder mystery. red herrings. Spoilers ahead! So much expectation, so much disappointment. It did keep me going until the very end, i will give it that. Though that was probably because I wanted to know what possible explanation could there be for Amelia's death after coming across tens and thousands of red herrings.
I saw someone compare this book to the murder mystery series Castle. So a cop and the mother try to figure out stuffs together, like Castle, an officer and a civilian. Thankfully there was no sexual tension between the two. One can handle only so much drama inside one book. This book was like an episode gone very very wrong. A little distraction, a few twists and turns, that is what makes the case occupying. This one had so many mystery waiting to be unfolded. Who is Amelia's father, who is this Ben guy, what the hell is wrong with Dylan, why does Zadie hate Amelia so much (because she hates Amelia so much she cannot be the killer, the red herring rule), who writes that blog, who killed Amelia, who sends the texts. Not just Castle, this book is like the combination of Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, Twin Peaks, even Suits.
So, the writer is a lawyer and has used these fancy lawery litigation terms and cases and what not, which bore the crap out of a normal reader and have absolutely no relevance to the storyline, whatsoever.
And when the mystery starts to unfold, it is like every character has done something wrong but not killed Amelia... "yes, i sent the text but i would never hurt Amelia". "yes i wrote the hateful blog but Amelia is like a dear friend to me"
After this whole Zadie's mom hating Kate (Amelia's mom) and the creepy fact that Jeremy (Amelia's dad) texts/emails her by pretending to be a teenage gay guy to be close to her daughter. The whole thing is very very creepy and the texts and why isn't Kate more freaked out! And why isn't Kate more sad, I mean come on, her only daughter, and she will most probably not have another child ever again! Do not even get me started on Kate's mom and dad. Why is every character in the book severely dysfunctional! And what kind of social disorder does Dylan have? Every second person in that book happens to be gay, is homosexuality that common! And why the hell would the sweet English teacher write the hate blog! So it was a big gasping moment and all but we need something more as to the motive to actually like that twist. In the end I would have been more satisfied if Amelia had actually killed herself but no, it was an accident and Sylvia, Sylvia did it, Amelia's BFF. Yes, I am pretty much giving up on the books written in this century.
