Dystopia

I had a friend who was very much into conspiracy theories and totally convinced with the idea of Illuminati, supposedly a devil worshiping community. I do not remember the full details and particulates as such but the gist of it was how some very famous and powerful persons apparently made a deal with the devil for power and were responsible for world domination and creating a one world government. And also, supposedly something big, either a world war or other natural calamity was soon to strike us. But as the so-called apocalypse date of 21 December 2012 came and went without anything significant and the small disasters like earthquake and hurricanes, and crisis like Syria attack and Kenya bombings were called mere coincidences, we did not really pay much attention to the idea of devil worshipers being behind these events.

I have read the Dan Brown novels about conspiracy theories and secret organizations. Though his work is called fiction, he says that the societies mentioned in his books actually exist. Exciting as they may be, I never really saw the plot of the book as something that could actually happen. This may have something to do with the fact that none of the secret organizations and conspiracies would, if true, effect me directly.

The type of conspiracy theories that interests me more are the fictions based on the dystopian theme. Though the exact definition of dystopia may vary, it can more or less be characterized by advanced technology but poor and unhappy lifestyle of people and deep rooted corruption. From the animated movie Wall-E  to the classic novel 1984, dystopian future has corruption in common. There are a number of conspiracies movies about how it is possible for powerful nations to keep eyes on people all over the world through advanced technology and about predictions of future when machines will rule over humankind. Though the movies usually end in a positive note when some hero saves the world from destruction, I wonder if the same can the same be said about our real future.

Rise of machines against the humans and the creation of a super computer to monitor all our moves may hopefully not happen in the near future and the idea of a world without plants and telescreens spying on people may seem farfetched now but not too much so if you think about the distant future. There is already corruption in most of the fields of most of the countries, be it something strong like direct money exchange or something more light like 'pulling a few strings'. With the urbanization and deforestation at its peak and new technologies with artificial intelligence ousting the old ones every few months,  who is to say our future will remain as it is.

Of course our future would be in real jeopardy if both the kinds of conspiracy theories would be true. Imagine a future of one world government powerful as it is made more powerful with spying, mind reading and thought controlling technology. Oh and I almost forgot to mention the aliens, they could be hostile and maybe side with the government in this dystopian future.
